LOWELL—James Joseph Smith, 91 years old, a longtime resident of the Belvidere section of Lowell, died late Friday evening, June 8th, at Wingate at Lowell. He was the husband of the late Maude Abbie (Hartwell) Smith, who died in December of 2002.
He was born in North Billerica, on September 17, 1915, a son of the late William C. and Mary H. (Bedard) Smith, and was a graduate of the Billerica Public School System.
Mr. Smith served in the United States Army during World War II, in the 101st Infantry Regiment, receiving a Purple Heart. He had worked briefly as a fireman, and later as a Machinist for Maintain Engineering in Woburn, and at Wang Labs in Lowell.
Surviving him is a son: Myron J. Smith, of Hollis, NH; and a brother: John E. Smith, of Billerica; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late: Catherine and her husband Robert Wright; Louise and her husband Edmund Webster; Mildred and her husband Robert Turner; Margaret and her husband Robert Valyou; Elizabeth and her husband Raymond Melvin; Eva and her husband Vernon Corkum; Arthur and his wife Marion Smith. He was also brother-in-law of the late Olive Smith.
Friends may call from 9 to 10 AM on Wednesday, June 13th, at the MAHONEY FUNERAL HOME, 187 Nesmith Street, (Rte. 38), Lowell. A service to follow at 10 AM in the funeral home. Burial in the Lowell Cemetery.
