Ronald F. Besso, 73, of New Bedford died Friday June 1, 2007 at home after a long illness. He was the husband of Joan L. (Bessette) Besso.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Eric J. and Gertrude (Conran) Besso, he lived in New Bedford and Sandwich for most of his life.
Mr. Besso was formerly employed as a commercial fisherman out of the Port of New Bedford for many years.
He was a member of the New Bedford Fishermen's Union and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Andrews-Dahill Post 1531. During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Stephen Besso and David Besso and his wife Paula, of Sandwich; two stepchildren, Janice Hinchliffe and her husband William of New Bedford and Michael Tuite of Florida; a sister, Gertrude M. Howrihan and her husband Timothy of Mattapoisett; three grandchildren, Emily Sullivan of Sandwich and Kyle and Kacie Hinchliffe of New Bedford; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
He was the brother of the late Eric E. Besso and Elizabeth Cameron.
A private funeral service was held on Tuesday at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Burial with military honors followed in the Mass. National Cemetery in Bourne.
