Mrs. Ioanna(Vergados) Glekas, 60, a longtime resident of the Belvidere section of the city, died Friday May 25th at her home surrounded by her family after a lengthy illness.
She was born December 4, 1946 in Agoriani, Sparta Greece, the daughter of the late Athanasios and Panagiota(Vergados) Vergados.
She was educated in the local schools of Greece. After she married her husband of forty one years, Athanasios Glekas, they immigrated to the United States and settled in Lowell in 1968. She worked for many years at the Jamppa Co., Raytheon Co., and most recently Microwave Radio Corporation.
She was a lifelong member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Lowell and was also a member of the Holy Trinity Philoptochos Society. Mrs. Glekas enjoyed spending time with her family and in her spare time she enjoyed cooking, sewing, and crocheting.
In addition to her husband Athanasios Glekas, she is survived by her daughter, Athena Quattrochi and her husband Ronald of Lowell, two sons, James Glekas of Lowell, Peter Glekas and his wife Kimberly of Chelmsford; six grandchildren, John, James, Joseph, and Arthur Quattrochi all of Lowell, and Nicholas and Cynthia Glekas of Chelmsford; a brother, Periklis Vergados and his wife Nitsa of Greece; a sister, Dina Vergados of Australia; two brothers in law, Stavros Glekas of Lowell, George Nicolakakis and his wife Tasia of Andover; also many nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the M.R. LAURIN & SON FUNERAL HOME, 295 Pawtucket St. Lowell on Tuesday from 4 to 8pm. The funeral will take place on Wednesday at 9:00 am from the funeral home to be followed by services at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Lowell at 10 a.m. Interment will be held in Westlawn Cemetery, Lowell.
