Irving Babener, a resident of Tewksbury, entered into eternal rest on May 30, 2007 at the Saints Memorial Medical Center in Lowell after a period of failing health. He was 84 years old.
Born in Peabody, the son of the late Harry & Ethel (Levine) Babener, Irving was raised in the Dorchester & Mattapan sections of Boston where he attended the Boston Public Schools. After his mother’s death, Irving & his father moved to Quincy for a number of years. He was a graduate of the Bentley College School of Accounting. Irving entered the United States Army on February 24, 1943 in Boston & served with the Headquarters & Service Co. 1288th Engineer Combat Battalion. He served throughout Central Europe & was a rifle marksman. He earned the Good Conduct Medal, the Victory Medal, the European Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon, & the American Theater Campaign Ribbon. Irving was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant on February 7, 1946 at Fort Devens, MA. Upon returning from military service, he was employed as an Accountant & made his residence in Billerica close to his sister, the late Esther Gladstone of Billerica. He was a former member of the Herbert J. Wolfe Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Mattapan. An avid reader who also had a love of numbers, Irving suffered from health issues in recent years, however the love that was shown to him by his niece, Linda Gladstone, made his final time more enjoyable. In addition to his sister, Irving was pre-deceased by his brother, Sam Babener of Seattle, WA. He is also survived by 3 nephews, Bruce Gladstone of Woburn, Jeffrey Babener of Portland, OR, & Keith Babener of Seattle, WA.
Funeral services for Irving will be held in the Torf Funeral Chapel, 151 Washington Ave. (Cary Sq) CHELSEA on Friday, June 1, 2007 at 1:00 PM. Burial will follow in the Poali Zedek Cemetery, 232 Fuller St. Everett. Memorial observance will be private.
