Bernice M. (Brown) Whiting, 83, formerly Whitman died Tuesday in the Rosewood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Peabody, after a period of failing health. She was the wife of the late Leonard E. Whiting.
Born in Brockton, brought up in Abington, daughter of the late Sidney and Sarah (Barnes) Brown.
Bernice was a 1942 graduate of Abington High and attended Nursing School in Fall River.
A lifelong resident of Whitman until she moved to High Ponds Estates in Bridgewater eight years ago. She also resided at the Rosewood Nursing & Rehabilitation in Peabody for the past six months.
She was married in Savannah GA., where her husband Leonard was stationed following World War II in 1945. She was a very devoted mother and wife.
Bernice was an active member of the First Congregational Church and a member of the Chi Kappa group at the church. She was also active for many years at the Whitman Senior Center and also her high school reunion committee.
She enjoyed sewing, knitting and belonged to local knitting groups. She donated her crafts to many needy organizations locally and overseas.
She is survived by her children, Kenneth Whiting, of Harwich, Cheryl McGrail of Newburyport, Jana Parenteau of Amesbury, Brenda Ledwell of Plympton and Sally Cavicchi of Hanson; also survived by ten grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews
Funeral services will be held Tuesday June 5th at 10:00 A.M. in the First Congregational Church of Whitman; 519 Washington Street, Whitman, MA, burial will follow in the Colebrook Cemetery, Whitman, MA. Visiting hours will be held Monday June 4th , 4-8 PM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street, (Route 58 at the Rotary Circle) Whitman.
