Obituary

LOWELL—John F. ‘Jack’ Murphy, 73 years old, a lifelong resident of Lowell, died Wednesday afternoon at Saints Medical Center, after a brief illness. He was the husband of Nancy (Cordingley) Murphy, with whom he would have celebrated 48 years of marriage next month.

He was born in Lowell, on December 20, 1933, a son of the late John F. and Margaret (Kelly) Murphy, and was a graduate of Lowell High School, Class of 1951. He also attended Bentley College.

Mr. Murphy served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Stickell. Upon his discharge, he was employed by the Purity Supreme Markets as a Supermarket Supervisor, until his retirement. He also owned and operated several Little Peach Variety Stores in the Greater Lowell Area.

He was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church and held membership in the Lowell Lodge of Elks, and Long Meadow Golf Club. He enjoyed golfing, playing with his grandchildren, watching sports, and ‘gardening’ with friends at Daytona Beach every spring.

Surviving him besides his wife are six sons and four daughters-in-law: Kevin and Lisa Murphy, of St Augustine, FL; Daniel Murphy, of Lowell; John and Louise Murphy, of Dunstable; Timothy and Marva Murphy, of Stratham, NH; Peter and Jane Murphy, of Framingham; and Robert Murphy, of Woburn; six grandchildren: Brian, Michael, Colin, Ryan, Aiden and Lea Murphy; a brother and sister-in-law: Brendon and Diane Murphy, of Nashua, NH; a sister: Margaret Donnelly, of Lowell; three sisters-in-law: Ann (Cordingley) Cooney, of Dracut; Sheila Murphy, of Chelmsford; and Merian Murphy, of Las Vegas, NV; a brother-in-law: Donald Wark, of Salem, MA; also several nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Neil Murphy, Terence Murphy and Maureen Wark.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM on Friday, May 25th at the MAHONEY FUNERAL HOME, 187 Nesmith Street, (Rte. 38), Lowell. His Funeral Mass to be offered on Saturday, May 26th, at 10 AM at the IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CHURCH, Lowell. Burial in St. Mary Cemetery, Tewksbury.
