Robert E. Marcotte
Robert E. Marcotte, 87, died on Friday, May 18, 2007, at The Arches, his home in Northfield, NH, where he was loved and received good care through a long illness. Before that, he always considered Manchester, NH his home.
Bob was the only child of Yvonne Cloutier Marcotte and P. Emile Marcotte. He attended Manchester schools. He was the salutatorian of his class at West High School where he graduated at the age of 16. After a post-graduate year at Phillips Academy, he studied business at Dartmouth College, graduating in 1941. A Dartmouth professor directed him to a career in insurance. He learned about the business with Aetna C & S Insurance Co. in Hartford, CT before enlisting in the Navy, during World War II. His service included an 18-month tour of duty in the South Pacific. During his Navy years, Bob met his wife of 50 years to whom he was completely devoted. She was Mary Ruth Woodyard Marcotte, who died in 2001.
Bob is survived by his three daughters and their families. They are Linda Marcotte Tatar and Neil Tatar of Queensbury, NY, Jan Calabro and Joseph Calabro of Waterbury, CT, and Susan Marcotte-Jenkins and Martin Jenkins of Bow, NH. His grandchildren are Benjamin and Daniel Tatar, Gina and Lisa Calabro, and Brad and Emily Jenkins.
Bob is remembered as an extremely friendly professional who had a sharp intellect and a reputation for being kind, honest, and always willing to go an extra mile for his customers. After a short return to Aetna Insurance following his discharge from the Navy, Bob established himself in the property and casualty insurance field in Manchester, becoming a partner with an established agent for about ten years before starting a solo agency. In 1962 he entered into a partnership called Marcotte and Plourde Insurance Agency, which he sold to the Sadler Insurance Agency in 1978, as Bob planned for his retirement years. He remained with the Sadler agency until 1991, when he officially retired by limiting his role there to that of a consultant.
He was a devout communicant for many years at St. Patrick Church and finally at St. Catherine Church in Manchester.
Bob was very dedicated to his family, who has many memories of good times at Lake Winnipesaukee, which was Bob’s favorite place. He also enjoyed various activities and hobbies, including boating, photography, golf, skeet shooting, bowling, tennis, and playing pool. He served the community in many ways. At various times, Bob was a member of the Board of Directors of the Manchester Boys Club, the Manchester Country Club, the Jolliet Club, and the American Red Cross. He also volunteered his time to the United Way and was an incorporator of the Amoskeag Savings Bank. Additionally, he was active in the American Legion William H. Jutras Post #43, chaired the USO Committee, and served in various capacities, including the presidency, of the WWII Last Man’s Club. He knew how to live life fully in the company of his wife and family and through the enjoyment of countless friendships that were made easily and lasted the test of time.
Calling hours will be from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday, May 25, at J.N. Boufford & Sons Funeral Home at 110 Bridge St., Manchester. There will be a time for sharing memories at 8:30 p.m. There will be a funeral mass at St. Patrick Church at 138 Coolidge Ave., in Manchester at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 26.
