Gloucester, Peter J. “Coach” Sullivan, age 63 of Gloucester, died Tuesday in his home following a lengthy illness. Mr. Sullivan was born in Jersey City, NJ, the son of the late Justin and the late Mary (Mahony) Sullivan. Coach was an educater from 1962 - 2000. He taught in Chelmsford, King Philips, Wayland and Woburn. Mr Sullivan was the founder of the Peer Education and Character Education programs in Woburn. He was also a Head Football Coach from 1966 - 1985 with a career record of 128 - 59 - 4, He with his teams won nine league titles and three state titles, 1971 with Wayland, 1975 & 1979 with Woburn. Coach was inducted into the Massachusetts Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 1989. Coach was an avid golfer and was a member of both the Bass Rocks C.C. in Gloucester and the Wenham C.C.. Coach Sullivan is survived by his loving companion Julie Hennessey of Beverly, his two devoted children and thier spouses, Mark J. Sullivan and his wife Theresa of Ashburnham, Margot S. Purdy and her husband Keith of Cumming, GA. He is also survived by his three loving grandchildren, Kelly and Justin Sullivan and Brock Purdy and his former wife Carolyn (Miller) Sullivan.
Funeral from the McLaughlin – Dello Russo Funeral Home 60 Pleasant St. Woburn, Friday at 10 AM. Followed by a funeral mass celebrated in St. Charles Church, 280 Main St. Woburn at 11 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Thursday 2 thru 9 PM. Interment will be private.
