Obituary

Reverend George F. Gorman, 95, Pastor Emeritus of St. Clement Church, Warwick died Tuesday, May 15, 2007 at St. Antoine Residence, Woonsocket. Born in Providence, son of the late John F. and Mary H. (Murphy) Gorman, he attended St. Teresa School, LaSalle Academy, and Providence College, Providence.

In preparation for the priesthood, he studied Philosophy and Theology at St. Mary Seminary, Baltimore, MD, and was ordained a priest on June 6, 1936 at the Cathedral of SS Peter and Paul, Providence by Bishop Francis P. Keough and celebrated his 70th year of Priesthood on June 6, 2006.

After a summer assignment at St. Benedict Church, Warwick, Father Gorman served as assistant pastor at St. Leo the Great Church, Pawtucket (1936-58) and at St. Paul Church, Cranston (1958-61). In August 1961 he was appointed the first pastor of the newly established parish of St. Clement, Warwick where he remained until his retirement in July 1981 as Pastor Emeritus.

In addition to his parochial duties, Father Gorman was active in youth and elderly affairs, such as the Boy Scouts, the Board of the Warwick Housing Authority and the Warwick Police Athletic League. He was an avid golfer and former member of the Metacomet Country Club and the Pawtucket Country Club.

After his retirement from parish administration, Father Gorman first lived at St. John Vianney Residence, Providence and continued to help out at various parishes throughout the Diocese. Later he moved to the Villa at St. Antoine and then St. Antoine Residence in North Smithfield.

Father Gorman was the brother of the late John F. Jr., Clement J., Charles and Raymond Gorman, Mary E. Rafferty, Catherine E. Coleman, and Doris I. Tremblay. He was the beloved uncle of Marybeth, David, Meghan, and Michaela Sweet, Kathy, Wade and Kaitlyn Murray, Jane A. Ledoux, Mary E. McClain, Judy Graham, Henry “Bud” Tremblay, Jr., Kathy Commins, Maureen Gorman and many grandnieces and grandnephews. He was the uncle of the late Thomas Gorman.

A Concelebrated Mass of Christian burial will be offered for the repose of his soul in St. Clement Church, 111 Long Street, Warwick, Friday at 10:30 am. Burial will follow in St. Ann’s Cemetery, Cranston. Visitation Thursday 4-7pm in the ANDERSON-WINFIELD Funeral Home, Rt 44 at Greenville Common, Greenville.
