Burton S. White, age 93, passed away peacefully at Mystic Manor, Saturday May 12, 2007 where he had been a resident since February 2006. He was born April 14, 1914 in Shelton, CT, son of the late Edwin White and Maud Crowther White of Groton, CT. He was predeceased by his wife of 70 years on January 10, 2007. He is survived by his three daughters, Claudia Gilmartin of Berwick, ME; Susan White of Utah; and Katherine Sonnenburg of Ledyard, and his 7 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
Burton attended schools in Shelton and Groton, CT and Dalton, MA and graduated from the former Bulkeley High School, New London in 1931. He served 9 years enlisted and officer in Connecticut National Guard and the U.S. Army. He was the Commander of the former Richard Morgan Post, American Legion, Mystic, CT. He was a member of the Charity and Relief Lodge #72, Mystic, CT since 1946.
He retired from Electric Boat in 1972 after 37 years as a supervisor in the Mechanical Design Department. He served many years in various offices of the Marine Draftsmen's Association and as Executive Vice President of the former National Council of Marine Draftsmen. After retiring he and his wife Eunice traveled extensively in North America and abroad returning to Mystic in 1995.
He was active for 25 years in St. Mark's Church in Mystic as the superintendent of the Sunday School, Lay Reader, Senior Warden and in the Diocese of Connecticut Episcopal Church.
His favorite pastimes were spending the winter weekends on the National Ski Patrol at OKEMO in Ludlow, VT and spending the summers on Cape Cod. He was a top blood donor for years finding himself on TV in 1984 for donation over 16 gallons.
His family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Saturday from 10:30am – 11:45am, immediately followed by a service at 12noon. The Rev. Doretta M. Colburn will officiate. Burial is private.
