Obituary

NEW BEDFORD — Frederick Richard Hawes, age 94 years, of North Dartmouth died Wednesday, May 9, 2007, at St. Luke's Hospital. He was the husband of Sarah Jennings to whom he was married on May 16, 1943.

Born in New Bedford, son of the late Simeon and Charlotte (Eddy) Hawes, he was a graduate of Dartmouth High School, Class of 1933 and attended Bedford Technical School.

Mr. Hawes in earlier years was employed at New Bedford Cordage and retired from Acushnet Company as a machinist. In high school he was a talented athlete in basketball and as a pitcher in baseball. He also was often on the golf course at Paskamansett.

A longtime member of the Smith Mills Christian Congregational Church where he served as deacon and trustee and in later years made a deacon emeritus, Mr. Hawes was also a volunteer fireman with District #3 for many years. For nearly ten years he programmed the town voting machines.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son Simeon Hawes and his wife, Bernadette of Barrington, R.I.; his daughters, Grace Hawes Wyss and her husband, David of New York City and Anna Hawes and her husband, Richard Paramoure of Taunton, Ma.; two grandchildren, Sarah Wyss Bremer and Alen Wyss; and three great grandchildren, Simeon Bremer, Tobias Bremer and Abigail Wyss. He was brother of the late Harold, Thomas and Ralph Hawes.

His funeral will take place on Monday, May 14th at 11 A.M., in the Smith Mills Christian Congregational Church, 11 Anderson Way, North Dartmouth. Visiting hours at the Wilson Chapel, 479 County St., NB on Sunday from 4-7 P.M. Burial in Pine Grove Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made in his name to his church.
