Rose M. (Onofrio) Lopes, 86, of New Bedford died May 10, 2007 at St. Luke's Hospital after a very courageous fight with her illness.
She was the wife of the late James F. Lopes.
Born in Hartford, CT, the daughter of the late Odorizio and Lucia (Vernacotola) Onofrio, she lived in Providence before moving to New Bedford in the 1940's.
Mrs. Lopes was formerly employed by W.T. Grant & Company, Star Store, Cove Discount Center and West End Laundry.
She was a very strong woman who enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, long walks all over the city, riding her bike and saying her rosary daily.
Survivors include a daughter, Joyce M. Barrett, and her husband Antone "Kippy" Barrett, Jr., of New Bedford; a son, James F. "Pug" Lopes, Jr., and his wife Denise deVillers-Lopes, of Somerset; 7 granddaughters, Andreá deVillers-Lopes of Somerset, Nakita Barrett, Kristen Barrett, Jillian Barrett, Kelsey Barrett and Shelby Barrett, all of New Bedford, and Lindsey Barrett-DeBarros of Fall River; a great-grandson, Gavin James Sanders; 2 great-granddaughters, Grace Arianna DeBarros and Jordan Marie Jones; many nieces and nephews, including Gloria Corso of East Granby, CT, who kept in close contact and shared many telephone conversations through the years; and her close friend, Jean Mello, who took her out often to eat, shop and enjoyed visiting together.
She was the sister of the late Irene Corso, Frank, Dominic, Anthony, Danny, Benjamin, Daniel, Robert and Rosie Onofrio.
Her Funeral Service will be held on Monday, May 14th at 10 AM in the International Church of the Nazarene, 284 Pleasant St., New Bedford. Visiting hours are omitted.
