George W. Bates, 84, of Mountaindale Road, Smithfield, died Sunday at Hebert’s Nursing Home. He was the husband of the late Constance M (Dowell) Bates.
Born in Medford, MA, a son of the late George W. & Edith (Thompson) Bates.
He served in the Canadian Army during WWII. He had several occupations throughout his career, including bus driver, mover and chauffeur.
He is survived by sons, G. Robert Bates of Chepachet, William A. Bates of Monroe, WA, J. Owen Bates of St. Louis, MO, Charles E. Bates of Smithfield and Larry A. Bates of New York; daughters, Constance M. Menard of Bristol, Barbara J. Keene of North Attleboro, MA, Edith M. Barbato of Woonsocket, Faith D. Bates of Warwick and Darlene H. Bates of East Providence; 33 grandchildren and many great grandchildren, nephews, and nieces and his only surviving sibling, Ada Bates of Nocona, TX. He was the father of the late Marian J. Bates, grandfather of the late Patricia N. Peck and Olivia Jacques and brother of the late Florence Roma and Viola Quinlan.
A Memorial service will be held on Thursday at 11:30am in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 551
