Obituary

BELLINGHAM: Michael J. Flanagan 68 of Bellingham, died Monday April 30, 2007 at the Indian River Medical Center in Vero Beach, Florida, following a long illness. He was the husband of Ruth (Nichols) Flanagan.

Born in Boston, November 12, 1938 a son of the late Leo B. and Irene (Rachdorf) Flanagan he formerly lived in Franklin before moving to Bellingham about 10 years ago.

He was educated in Boston, and was the graduate of St. Michael’s College in Vermont, and received his Masters Degree in Education from Boston College. He was for many years until his retirement a science teacher at Dedham High School.

He was very active with youth sports, and in 2004, was inducted into the Dedham High School Athletic Hall of Fame. His credits include being a 4 sport coach, an extended tenure with the girls soccer team, six years coaching JV girls basketball, 1 year as head varsity coach, was an assistant for 3 years for the girls track team, and was a 12 year assistant coach for the girls tennis team. He was the first girls soccer coach and started the program in 1979. He was the head varsity coach for 18 years with an overall record of 160 wins 92 losses and 38 ties. He coached the undefeated Bay State League Championship girls soccer team in 1981 with a 13-0-1 record. He was a 2 time Bay State League Coach of the Year, and was President of the Dedham Coaches Assoc. for 15 years.

In addition to sports he enjoyed woodworking especially making furniture, and spending winters in Vero Beach, Florida.
Survivors in addition to his wife include his stepmother Dorothy Flanagan of Durham, Conn., his children: Pamela, Brian, Paula, Shaun, Patrick and Coleen Flanagan all of St. Albans, VT. Kathleen E. Nasuti and her husband Peter of Blackstone, a brother Christopher P. Flanagan of Durham, Conn., 2 sisters Kathleen Flanagan of San Francisco, Calif., and Patricia Flynn of Middletown, Conn., and 3 grandchildren: Matthew, Jessica, and Kevin Nasuti.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral Tuesday at 8:15AM from the Charles F. Oteri & Son Franklin Funeral Home 33 Cottage St. Franklin www.franklinfuneral.com, with a funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church 1 Church SQ Franklin at 9 AM. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
