John H. Baker, 87, of Chester, NH, died Saturday, April 21, 2007 in the Union Hospital in Lynn, MA. Mr. Baker was born in Woburn, MA on April 17, 1920, a son of the late John E. and Ella M. (Corlis) Baker. He was born and raised in Woburn, MA and had attended Franklin Institute and MIT night classes. He lived in Woburn until moving to Chester in 1982. Mr. Baker was a US Navy WWII veteran serving with the Seabees in the 94th Naval Construction Battalion in Oahu and Guam. He had been a self-employed contractor and builder in Woburn from 1955 - 1982. Mr. Baker was a 50-year member of the Masons in Woburn, a member of the Woburn Rotary Club, and an active member of the North Congregational Church in N. Woburn. He was also an active member of the Chester Congregational-Baptist Church and was active in church rebuilding. He enjoyed woodworking and taking care of his six acres.
He is survived by two daughters, Janet Souza and her husband Joseph of Littleton, MA, and Dianne Cadigan of Nahant, MA; two sons, John H. Baker, Jr. of Weymouth, MA, and David L. Baker and his wife Marie of Woburn; twelve grandchildren; and five great grandchildren; four brothers, Frank Baker of Lowell, MA, Charles Baker of Wilmington, MA, Robert Baker of Orford, NH, and Harold Baker of Plaistow, NH; and also by several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife, Greta (Slack) Baker who died in 1995, as well as two brothers, Eben Baker and Fred Baker.
Calling hours were on Tuesday, April 24th from 2 - 4 & 6 - 8pm in the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch St., Derry. Funeral services were held on Wednesday at 1:30pm in the Chester Congregational-Baptist Church, Chester St., Chester. Burial followed in Great Hill Cemetery in Chester.
