Obituary

Lucy Murray, 95, passed away after a long illness on Sunday morning, April 15, 2007, at Avery Manor in Needham, MA.

Lucy was the born to the late Frederic and Amanda (Richardson) Murray in Wollaston, MA on January 25, 1925. Having moved to Needham when she was seven years old, Lucy graduated from Needham High School and attended Bryant and Stratton Secretarial School until a heart condition caused her to leave before graduation. Warned by her physician that she would not live past age 25, Murray consulted with Dr. Paul Dudley White. His advice was to fulfill her dream and enroll in Faulkner Hospital’s nursing program, which she did after signing a release of responsibility for her heart condition. After graduation, Lucy pursued her nursing career at Glover Memorial Hospital in Needham. The majority of her nursing career was performed at the Glover until her retirement in the early 1970s.

Lucy had been a member of the First Baptist Church in Needham since 1956, serving first as an assistant secretary. After her retirement from Glover Memorial Hospital, Lucy worked as a private practice nurse, until the day that she was called to serve as the church’s secretary. In response to the call, Lucy finished the private care case she was on and immediately assumed the role of secretary, a position she faithfully held for many years.

Lucy especially enjoyed traveling by car or on bus tours throughout America and Canada with her dear friend and fellow nurse Enid MacGray. Answering a call for nurses in Greeley, Colorado in the mid 1970s, both Lucy and Enid were employed at Greeley County Hospital for two years before returning to Needham.

Lucy leaves to mourn her passing her niece, Frances (Murray) Hargreaves and her husband Robert of Jefferson, ME; nephew Frederic Murray and his wife Susan of Michigan, WI and her dear friend Enid MacGray. She was predeceased by her brothers Frederic and Fletcher Murray.

A Memorial Service will be held in her honor on Monday, April 23, 2007 at 12:30 PM at the First Baptist Church in Needham, 858 Great Plain Avenue. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials in Lucy Murray’s memory be sent to the First Baptist Church in Needham.
