Obituary

Helen (Stone) Frary, 89, of Concord NH, formerly of Northwood NH and Needham died on Friday April 13 at Norwell Knoll Nursing Home in Norwell two weeks after suffering a stroke at her residence in New Hampshire, The Birches at Concord. She was born in Somerville MA, the daughter of the late Walter and Ruth (McGown) Stone and was a graduate of Somerville High School and Mount Holyoke College. Helen raised her family in Needham where she was active at Carter Memorial United Methodist Church. Mrs. Frary was a Cub Scout den leader and the founder of the Camp Fire Girls group in Needham. She was an activist in the cause of the environment and nature, and on many social justice issues. Following the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, she invited into her family Erno Fonagy, a Hungarian refugee and provided him a home and American “family” for about 20 years.
After retiring with her husband to Northwood, NH in 1975, she was a volunteer worker at ABC Quilts, providing baby quilts around the world to victims of AIDS. Mrs. Frary is a longtime member and supporter of the New Hampshire Audubon Society and, for many years, of the Appalachian Mountain Club. She is predeceased by her husband, Charles S. Frary Jr., and leaves behind a son, Charles S. Frary III and his wife Harriet Loring of Norwell, MA; a daughter, Ruth F. Montgomery and her husband John of LaPlace, L. She was the grandmother of Beth and Steve Deschenes of Lunenburg, MA, Faith and Jason Salter of Ayer MA and Matthew and Robbie Frary of Los Angeles CA. She was the great grandmother f 4 great grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, April 20th, at 11:00 AM at the Church Hill United Methodist Church, 630 River St. Norwell. The family will greet friends from 10:30 am before the service, in the Church Hill UMC Fellowship Center, behind the church at 11 Church Street. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the New Hampshire Audubon Society, 3 Silk Farm Road, Concord NH 03301 or to the Northwood Congregational Church memorial Fund, P.O.
