Obituary

George Pendleton Clark, a longtime Ledyard farmer, passed away Friday at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Clark was born on the family farm in Ledyard on January 28, 1919 the son of Joseph Alfred Clark Sr. and Fannie M. Lamb Clark. He attended local schools and was a graduate of N.F.A.

Prior to his retirement, he owned and operated Ledyard Bus Co. for many years, founding the business with just one bus and eventually operating with over 30 buses.

Active in the Ledyard community, Mr. Clark was one of the founders of the Ledyard Youth League, served on the Ledyard Fair Committee, and was a member of the Ledyard Congregational Church. . He was also known as the self-proclaimed “Ledyard Road Inspector”, logging thousands of miles touring the roads on Ledyard in his El Camino accompanied by his dog, “Sheena”. He also enjoyed antique tractors and cars.

After his daughter Delia’s tragic death in the 1980’s, Mr. Clark became caregiver for his three grandchildren and later his great-grandson. He was proud to have raised 3 generations of his immediate family.

He was married to Dorothy (Avery) Clark for over 60 years before her death in 2003. He was also predeceased by his daughter, Delia Clark, and siblings Louise Standish and J. Alfred Clark Jr.

Mr. Clark is survived by a daughter, Carolyn Clark of Ledyard; his grandchildren, Krista Rainey, Scott Rainey, and Jason Rainey; and a great-grandson, Johnathan Rainey, all of Ledyard.

His family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Monday from 4-6pm. A Memorial Service will be conducted at Ledyard Congregational Church on Tuesday at 11am.
