Obituary

ROBERT W. HAVILAND, 74, a Hingham resident for the past 50 years, died on Wednesday, April 11th at his home after a 20 year battle with prostate cancer. Bob was born in Weymouth and graduated from Weymouth High School and Norfolk Agricultural School. He worked in the floriculture industry for 55 years, retiring in 1998 as Supervisor of the Greenhouses at the Newton Cemetery Corporation. Not being one to sit still, he then served as the Veteran's Officer for the Town of Hingham for the next 6 years. He also served as Tree and Park Commissioner for the Town of Hingham and County Director for the town on the Board of the Plymouth County Extension Service. He was a devoted member of the Hingham-Weymouth Kiwanis Club, serving as President and as a Lt. Governor in the Foundation. Bob was also an active member of the Edward Ball Cole American Legion Post in Hingham, the Disabled American Veterans' Post in Weymouth, the Veterans' Commission of Hingham, the Massachusetts Flower Growers Association and the Massachusetts Veterans' Service Officers Association. Bob served in the United States Coast Guard during the Korean War and was Treasurer and Vice President of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Duane Association.

He leaves his wife of 50 years, Jeanne M. (Johnson) Haviland; three daughters, Margaret Haviland of Angleton TX, Suzanne Hoey and her Husband Stephen of Whitman, and Wendy Anne Andrade and her husband Carlos of New Bedford. He was the proud grandfather of Carey Anne Hoey and Robert Hoey of Whitman, and Nathan, Nicholas and Christina Andrade of New Bedford. He was the brother of Marie (Haviland) Leavens and her husband Robert of Falmouth and Port Charlotte, FL, the late George Haviland and the late Walter Haviland. Also survived by his sister in law, Jacqueline Johnson of Pembroke and many nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, April 16th at 11 AM at St. Paul's Church, 147 North St., Hingham Square.

Friends may visit at the Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, 21 Pond St., Hingham on Sunday from 3-7 PM.

Donations in his memory may be made to Camp Sunshine, 35 Acadia Rd., Casco, ME 04015.

The interment is to be private.
