Thaddeus Hugh (Tad) Spencer died on Sunday, April 8 in Mystic, CT.
A native of Springfield, MA, Tad earned a bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering from Yale University in 1949. He began his career with the DuPont Company in Seaford DE, followed by managerial assignments in Aiken, SC, Chattanooga, TN, Martinsville, VA, Seaford, DE, Richmond, VA, Glasgow, DE, and Deepwater, NJ. Included in his plant experience were startups of the Savannah River Plant in Aiken, and the Permasep Plant in Glasgow.
Following early retirement in 1985, Tad remained active as a safety and environmental consultant with assignments as varied as the construction of The Chunnel, and steel operations in Australia. He volunteered for the Hagley Museum, and also served on several boards including that of Creative Grandparenting Inc. and the Association of Yale Alumni. Tad had a deep love of music; he played piano and sang in the Yale Glee Club and Christ Church St. Cecilia choir.
He is predeceased by his wife, Garnett, and survived by their children: daughter Forrest Spencer of Columbia, MD, sons Thaddeus Michael of Mystic, CT, and Stephen Chapin of Burlington VT, five grandchildren, and a sister, Nancy Angers, of Avon, CT.
A Memorial Service will be held at Christ Church Christiana Hundred, Buck Road at Route 100, Greenville, DE on Saturday, April 21st at 3:30 PM. Burial will be private.
