Obituary



Worcester—Saul H. Shanit, 71, died Saturday, April 7, 2007, at home after an illness with his wife by his side.

He was born in Philadelphia, PA, April 25, 1935, son of Robert and Celia (Apfelbaum) Shanit. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Donna; his two daughters, Cathy Lane and her husband David and Jeanine Massoud and her husband John all of California; and two grandchildren, Chelsea and Melanie Massoud. He was predeceased by his sister, Carole Shanit.

He graduated with the Class of 1953 from Leicester High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served as Boatswain’s Mate Third Class from 1953 to 1957 during the Korean Conflict. Thereafter, he attended Boston University. He worked as a roofer and roofing foreman for 37 years. In 1995 he retired as roofing foreman from B.H. Cutler Roofing Co., in Worcester. Mr. Shanit was a member of Roofers Local Union 33. He was a former corporate member of Regatta Point Community Sailing, at one time serving on the Board of Directors. He was also a member of American Legion Post 318. For many years he enjoyed numerous cruises and travel destinations. Skiing and tinkering in his workshop were favorite hobbies. He was an avid sailor and was enthusiastic about all his trips, notably sailing the Intracoastal Waterway with his wife on their boat from Rhode Island to Florida and back. Saul enjoyed visiting with his many friends and mostly his loving family.
