North Smithfield – Helen P. Greene, 83, of North Main St., Slatersville, died Tuesday at home, under the care of her daughter, Rita H. Greene and her partner, Kimberly Huard. Mrs. Greene was the wife of the late Maj. Richard P. Greene, USMC (Ret.), who died in 1996.
Born in Jersey City, New Jersey, she was a daughter of the late Richard D. and Marie (Heffern) Arthur.
During WWII, Mrs. Greene served in the U.S. Navy WAVES. She served in several areas around the country and was discharged with the rank of Yeoman 2nd Class. She received the American Campaign Ribbon and the Victory Medal.
Following her service, Mrs. Green married her late husband and resided in many parts of the country during Maj. Greene’s career in the U.S. Marine Corps. In 1963 the family moved to Slatersville, where Mrs. Greene has resided since. She worked as a clerk for the U.S. Postal Service in Slatersville for many years before retiring in 1985.
Helen was a devoted wife and mother, and cherished spending time with her grandchildren. She enjoyed reading to local children in area schools. She was a longtime communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church in Slatersville.
In addition to her daughter, she is survived by 6 sons, Lt. Col. Michael R. Greene, USMC (Ret.), of NY, Stephen P. Greene, of CT, Daniel T. Greene, of OR, Peter R. Greene, of CT, William H. Greene, of CT, and Richard L. Greene, of MA. She was the sister of Thomas Arthur, of NJ, Mary Possehl of GA, and the late Richard Arthur. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Her Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday at 10:00 am in St. John the Evangelist Church, Church St., Slatersville. Burial with Military Honors will follow in the Slatersville Cemetery. Visiting hours are Monday from 5-8 pm in the Fournier & Fournier Funeral Home, 463 South Main St., Woonsocket.
