Obituary

Robert W. Rae, MD, 88 of Derry, NH died April 3, 2007 at his home following a lengthy illness. Dr. Rae was born in Marshall, MN on September 2, 1918 a son of the late Robert and Vivian (DeGroat) Ray. He grew up in West De Pere, WI and graduated cum laude form the University of Wisconsin, Madison. While attending the University of Wisconsin he played football for Harry Stuhldreher, one of “The Four Horseman of Notre Dame”. A knee injury shortened his football career so he concentrated on track and field, including the javelin event at the 1944 NCAA’s. He graduated from the University of Southern California Medical School. He served his internship at Georgetown University Surgical Service and was Chief Resident at Georgetown University Surgical Service of the District of Columbia General Hospital. In addition, he was a Fellow at the Lahey Clinic and Chief Resident in Thoracic Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.
Dr. Rae was in private practice in California before coming to Derry to practice with Dr. G. Masry in 1973. He later practiced medicine at the NH State Hospital in Concord, NH. He eventually returned to California where he performed pro bono medicine before coming back to New Hampshire to retire. He was an active member in the American Indian Physicians Association.
He is survived by his wife, Lois R. (Palmer) Rae of Derry, one son, Robert Rae of Monterey, CA, one sister, Vivian Haase and a niece, Marjorie Palmer both of Madison, WI.
Memorial services will be held in the Spring in Wisconsin. The Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, Derry, NH is handling arrangements.
