Obituary

QUINEBAUG, CT – Mary J. (Walker) Maitland, 96, of 29 Walker Road, died Saturday, March 17, in Day Kimball Hospital, Putnam. Her husband of 41 years, James A. Maitland, died in 1984.

She leaves a sister, Elizabeth Bourbeau of Quinebaug; a sister-in-law, Rita Walker of Quinebaug; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Stanley, Francis and Harold Walker, all of Quinebaug.

She was born in Thompson, a daughter of George and Margaret (Gleason) Walker. She graduated from Tourtellotte Memorial High School in 1929. She then earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Willimantic State College after earning many credits at Annhurst College. She retired from the Thompson School System after 41 teaching years.

Mrs. Maitland was a member of the friends of the Thompson Library, the Thompson Historical Society, the Grosvenordale Women’s Club, the Senior Citizens Club, AARP, Woodstock Hill Quilters and Saint Stephen’s Church. She enrolled in many craft classes, was an avid reader and traveler.

The funeral will be held Wednesday, March 21, from Scanlon Funeral Service, 38 East Main St.,Webster, with a Mass at 10:00 AM in Saint Stephen’s Church, corner of Routes 131 and 197. Burial will be in West Thompson Cemetery. Calling hours are from 4:00 to 7:00 PM Tuesday, March 20, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the George Walker Scholarship Fund, c/o Quinebaug Volunteer Fire Dept, Route 197, or to the Quinebaug Volunteer Fire Dept., Route 197, or to St. Stephen’s Church, PO Box 222, all in Quinebaug, CT 06262, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
