Ellen Bird Scott, 87, lifelong lover of flowers, frogs and sailors, died of natural causes on March 7, 2007, at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital, New London, Connecticut.
She was born November 6, 1919, in Annapolis, Maryland, to Florence Elise Bird and Joseph Irving Bird. She was schooled at Hannah Moore Academy.
She married Robert Dunbar Scott on December 27, 1939. The couple was married over 53 years and resided in Paoli, PA for the first 33 years of their marriage where they raised their four children. They retired to Mason’s Island, Mystic, Connecticut, in 1972 and lived there for 21 years until Mr. Scott’s death in 1993. Mrs. Scott remained in her home until her death.
Mrs. Scott was well known in Mystic for her many benefactions and volunteer work with local organizations including the Pilots of Mystic Seaport, the schooner Brilliant and its sailing programs, Lawrence and Memorial Hospital, Pequotsepos Nature Center and the Mystic Library.
Mrs. Scott is well remembered in Paoli for her community service, particularly with Family Service of Chester County and St. Peter’s Church in the Great Valley.
She had been a member of the Vineyard Haven (Mass.) Yacht Club, Mason’s Island Yacht Club, Ram Island Yacht Club, Nauyaug Cruising Club, the Union League of Philadelphia and Old Fuds.
Mrs. Scott is survived by all of her four children: Robert Scott, Jr. of Avalon, NJ; Sandra Drayer of Gladwyne, PA; Barbara Everdell of Brooklyn Heights, NY; J Scott of Mystic, CT; five grand-children and three great grand-children. She is also survived by her older sister Emma Bird Revelle of Baltimore, Maryland.
Funeral services and burial will be at The Baptist Church In The Great Valley, 945 North Valley Forge Road, Devon, PA on Saturday, March 17th at 1pm.
