Obituary

Irving Joel Turner, 74, of Huntsville died Friday. Mr. Turner was born to James R. Turner and Grace Alston Turner on May 23, 1932. He was raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., where he was educated in the public schools. After completing his education, he immediately entered the U.S. Army. Irving's twenty-plus years of distinguished service to our country in the U.S. Army began in July 1950 in the segregated services. During his service, he had tours in occupied Germany, France, Greenland, Vietnam, and numerous stateside army posts, to include Redstone Arsenal. He defended our country bravely in the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War, in which he earned numerous commendations, including the Good Conduct Medal, Army Commendation Medal, European Occupation Medal, Distinguished Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Purple Heart, and Bronze Star. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Beverly Wallace Turner. The union of Irving and Carrie Smith Oats bore five children, who survive him, Andre L. Harris and husband Lynn of Huntsville; Irving J. Turner and wife Patricia of Jonesboro, Ga., Samuel W. Turner and wife Antoinette of Philadelphia, Montoya J. Turner and wife Lisa of Lithonia, Ga., and Shari L. Turner-Edwards and husband Charles of Huntsville. Irving is also survived by his brothers, James Harold Turner and Raymond Alston; nephew, Roger Turner; niece, Celeste Grace Turner; grandchildren, L.C. Deljuan Jackson, Michael Williams, Latia Hereford, Sierra Jackson, Romance Turner, Irving Turner III, Tateana Turner, Andre Harris II, Adrienne Harris, Quentin Turner Anderson, and a host of other close relatives and friends. Visitation will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. today at Nelms Memorial Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Church Street Cumberland Presbyterian Church in America with the Rev. Dennis Green officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Memorial Gardens. Nelms Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements
