Obituary

Stuart B. Matheson, 88, resident of Duxbury.

Stuart B. Matheson, retired General Agent for the Provident Life and Accident Insurance Co., died on February 23, 2007, after a short illness. He was 88 years of age and had been a resident of Duxbury for 42 years.
Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Mr. Matheson grew up in Belmont and was a graduate of Belmont High School. He graduated from Northeastern University in 1941 with a major in Economics and Sociology. Following graduation he was employed in the research department of the Bemis Brothers Bag Co.
When America entered World War II, Mr. Matheson volunteered with the United States Army Air Force, where he was trained as a pilot and became a flying instructor and instrument instructor. He served in the Army Air Force Reserve after the War and was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain in 1955. After completion of active service in 1945, he became a Feed and Grain broker and then a packaging engineer for Horn Packaging Corporation.
The heart of his career was life insurance, as a specialist in estate and business planning. He worked with Connecticut General Life Insurance Co. for 20 years and then for more than 20 years as a General Agent with the Provident Life & Accident Co. He qualified as a member of the Million Dollar Round Table of the National Association of Life Underwriters.
He was a member and Past President of the Duxbury Rotary Club, and a former member of the Algonquin Club of Boston.
Mr. Matheson was the son of Ivar John Matheson of Sweden and Emma Christina Elizabeth Benson of East Greenwich, Rhode Island. He was married to the late Anne Marston Fogler and after her death to the late Mary Joan Smith. He leaves two daughters and their husbands, Susan Matheson (daughter of Anne) and Jerome Pollitt of Woodbridge, Connecticut, and Deborah (daughter of Mary Jo) and Robert Burdick of Plymouth, Massachusetts; three grandchildren, Jennifer, Rainer, and Charlotte; and one great-granddaughter, Emma. He also leaves a sister-in-law, Jane Gaunt, of Amesbury, Massachusetts.
Services will be held at St. John the Evangelist Church, 410 Washington Street, Duxbury, Massachusetts, on Friday, March 2, 2007, at 11:00 a.m.
