Charles H. Cheetham, 87, a lifelong resident of Norton died on Sunday February 18, 2007 at the Caritas Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton, MA. He was the beloved husband of the late Helen V. (Bartley) Cheetham who passed away on January 1, 1975.
Born in Taunton, MA on January 3, 1920 he was a dear son of the late George K. and Katherine (Nason) Cheetham.
He grew up and was educated in Norton schools. He was a 1938 graduate of the Bristol County Agricultural High School, where he was a member of the Basketball team.
During WWII, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps, serving in the 9th Air Force. He was stationed in England and France, and was honorably discharged on December 19, 1945 with the rank of sergeant.
After returning home from the service Mr. Cheetham worked as a pipe fitter, first at the former Defiance Bleachery in Barrowsville, and then at the Foxboro Co. He retired in 1985 as the Maintenance Manager of the East Bridgewater, Brockton and Plymouth plants.
He was a 50 year member of Saint James Lodge A.F. & A.M. of Mansfield and was a 40 year member of the Rabboni Royal Arch Chapter in North Attleboro. Thru his affiliation with the masons he was a life member of the Weary Travelers Club in Wareham.
He was a member of the Fillmore-Nason Post 8049, VFW in Norton. In the early 1960’s Mr. Cheetham served as a Water Commissioner for the town of Norton. He was a member of the Foxboro Co. 10 year and 25 year clubs.
Charlie enjoyed hunting, fishing, working on his home, and especially his daily Manhattan.
He is survived by his devoted son William E. Cheetham and his wife Linda of Norton. His loving grandchildren Kelley S. Baker and her husband Shawn of West Yarmouth and Zachary A. Cheetham and Barbara-Ann H. Cheetham both of Norton. His great granddaughters Megan, Natalie and Ava Baker all of West Yarmouth. Also surviving several nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his twin sisters Anne H. Cheetham and Alice B. Anderson.
Funeral services, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Wednesday February 21st at 10:30 A.M. at the Norton Memorial Funeral Home 19 Clapp St.(Off Route 140, Taunton Ave.) Norton. Burial will follow in the Norton Center Cemetery. Norton.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday February 20th from 6-9 P.M. at the funeral home.
A Masonic service will be conducted on Tuesday evening at 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
