Arthur C. Burton, Sr., 84, of New Bedford died Thursday February 15, 2007 at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness. He was the husband of the late Florine P. (Correia) Burton.
Born in Newport, RI, the son of the late Benjamin and Nellie (Burton) Burton, he lived in New Bedford for most of his life.
He was a member of Union Baptist Church, where he was a member and president of the choir.
Mr. Burton was formerly employed as a painter, glazier, and housing inspector for the Newport Naval Base until his retirement.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps with the 345th Aviation Squad.
He was a member of the Andrews-Dahill Post 1531 Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Bisca Tournament Club, and a life member of the NAACP.
Survivors include two children Arthur C. Burton, Jr., of New Bedford and Charlene A. Burton of Pitman, NJ; two grandchildren, Arthur C. Burton III and Stevin A. Burton; and many nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Nellie "Sis" Addison, Oliver C. "Bolly" Burton, Steven "Buddy" Burton, Benjamin Burton, Jr., Ruth Bonadie, and Charles "Boogie" Burton.
His Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday at 10 AM in Union Baptist Church. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.
