Obituary

DRACUT - Maurice F. McGrath, Jr., 78, a lifelong resident of Dracut, died Friday February 9th in Saints Medical Center in Lowell. He was the husband of the late Frances J. (Gogas) McGrath who died in 2000.

He was born in Lowell on April 19, 1928, and was a son of the late M. Frances and Alice D. (Gallagher) McGrath. He was a graduate of Dracut High School and Donohue School of Boston. He also attended Lowell Technological Institute.

Mr. McGrath served in the Army Air Force in the South Pacific Theater of Operation in Okinawa and the Philippine Islands during World War II.

He was employed for many years a the Building Inspector for the town of Dracut.

In his free time he enjoyed landscaping and spending time with his faithful companion, his dog Sam. He also enjoyed spending summers and fishing at Hampton Beach, NH.

He was a communicant of St. Michael Church in Lowell. He was a former executive committee member and past post Commander of the Dracut American Legion, Leo C. Roth Post 315, a former Sergeant at Arms for the State Vice Commander of the MA American Legion as well as being the Middlesex County Assistant Sergeant at Arms and a former member of the Child Welfare Committee for the American Legion. He was also form executive board member of the 40 and 8 Club of Greater Lowell, a member of the Dracut Knights of Columbus and past Vice Chairman for the Dracut March of Dimes.


He is survived by a brother and sister-in-law Richard and Anne McGrath of Naples, FL; two sisters and brothers-in-law Maureen and Rae Farrar of Sterling, VA, and Katharine and Harold Garvey of Dracut; his close friends and neighbors John and Jackie Arseneaux; and many nieces and nephews.

He was also the brother of the late Elizabeth White, Robert McGrath, and John McGrath.

Friends may call at the DRACUT FUNERAL HOME, 2159 Lakeview Avenue, DRACUT, on Monday from 4 until 7pm. His funeral will be held from the funeral home on Tuesday at 9am followed by his Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 10am in St. Michael Church, Lowell. Spring burial in Richardson Cemetery, Dracut. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his name to the Lowell Humane Society, 951 Broadway Street, Lowell, MA 01854.
