Carleton G. Smith., 89, died Friday at the Wingate @ Silverlake, after a period of failing health. He was the husband of B. Lorraine (Hall) Smith of Kingston, formerly of Whitman.
He was born and raised in Whitman, son of the late George and Helen (Horte) Smith.
He was a lifelong resident of Whitman, a graduate of Whitman High School, class of 1936; he also attended Williams Business School in Brockton.
Carleton worked part time for the Regal Shoe Company in Whitman, the US Naval Ammunition Depot in Hingham as a bookkeeper, then for the, People Savings Bank in Brockton for 36 years.
A Veteran of the United states Navy during WWII, as a pilot.
He was a lifetime member of the First Congregational Church of Whitman, and served on all boards and committee’s of the church, member of the YMCA, the original Jaycee’s of Whitman and a 50 year active member of the Mason’s.
He served as chairman of the Whitman School Committee and Finance Committee.
Carleton enjoyed bowling, golfing and painting
He is survived by his wife B. Lorraine (Hall) Smith of Kingston, formerly of Whitman; 2 daughters Jeanne Gale of Hanover and Nancy Bates of Harwich, his son Paul Smith of So Portland ME.; also 5 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the Allan and Burton Smith.
His memorial service will be held on Saturday February 17th at 1:00 P.M. in the First Congregational Church, 519 Washington Street, Whitman, MA. 02382. Burial will be held at a later date.
