Leo E. Coughlin, Sr., 90, of Canterbury Woods, Attleboro formerly of Norton died on Saturday February 3, 2007 at the Epoch Senior Health Care Center in Norton surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of the late Mary E. (Mori) Coughlin to whom he had wed to for 53 years at the time of her death on June 12, 1989.
Born in South Boston, MA on April 30, 1916 he was a son of the late Edward T. and Annie (Larkin) Coughlin.
Mr. Coughlin was a retired Operating Engineer having worked for Local 4 IUOE for 30 years before retiring. He was a charter member of Local 4 IUOE where he served the Union by being elected to several conventions. He worked on several Boston landmarks including the construction of the Prudential Building, the Callahan and Sumner Tunnels and the Hatch Shell. However, his proudest accomplishment was building his family.
During WWII Mr. Coughlin served in the United States Army. He was honorably discharged in 1945. He was a life member and past commander of the Lieutenant Harold A. Healy American Legion Post 222 in Norton. He was also a life member of the 40/8, both the Taunton and Attleboro VFW Post and the DAV where he rose to the rank of Department Jr. Vice -Commander District #7. Always willing to help a fellow veteran, Leo was a former volunteer coordinator at the VA Medical Center in Brockton.
In Norton, Mr. Coughlin served as a member of the Norton Council on Aging. He also worked as a poll worker during Town Elections and was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Norton.
His fondest memories were of the many family gatherings where he would just sit and watch his family. Any gathering started with the immediate family that at any given time could be as large as 40. In recent years Leo spent much time rooting for the local sports teams. He was a true New England sports enthusiast who especially enjoyed watching the Patriots and Red Sox.
He is survived by his devoted children Donald Beurman and his wife Ethel of Dedham, Joanne Steele and her husband Dick of Cape Coral, Florida, Deacon Leo E. Coughlin, Jr. and his wife Maureen of Hampden, Mary Lombardo and her husband Leo of Norton and Brian Coughlin and his wife Ruthie of Norton. He was the brother of Ann Gormley-Flynn of Naples, Florida, Dottie Ouellette of Rockland, Henry Coughlin of South Boston and the late Alice Pierce, Kay Marino, Charles Coughlin, Edward Coughlin, Jr., and Raymond Coughlin. Also surviving are his cherished 15 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, 4 great- great grandchildren as well as his many loving nieces and nephews.
His funeral Mass, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be celebrated on Wednesday February 7th at 11:30 A.M. in St. Mary’s Church, South
Worcester St., Norton. Burial with military honors will follow in the Timothy Plain Cemetery, Norton.
Visiting hours will be held prior to the Funeral Mass on Wednesday morning beginning at 9:00 A.M. at the Norton Memorial Funeral Home 19 Clapp St. (Off Route 140, Taunton Ave.) Norton.
