Barbara Ann (Deeb) Gilbert of Newton Centre, a retired Psychiatric Social Worker for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, died Mon Jan 29, 2007 at her home.
Born and raised in Norwood she graduated from Norwood High School and received her undergraduate degree from BU in 1956 and her graduate degree in Social Work from BU in 1958. She later worked with antiques and later as a real estate agent for Carlson Real Estate and Century 21. Barbara was also a member of the NSWA and the ACLU and had been a member of the First Baptist Church in Newton and their Bible Study group. She was a voracious reader and enjoyed theatre, opera and traveling. She had also served as a precinct captain for Congressman Fr. Robert Drinan’s first congressional campaign and had supported Gene McCarthy. Barbara enjoyed many summers in Wellfleet.
Wife of the late Dr. Raymond R. Gilbert and sister of the late Frederick Deeb she is survived by her sons Matthew H. of Newton Centre and Benjamin N. of Colorado Springs CO, her step daughter Dana Gilbert and her husband James Epstein of Newton, her grandchildren Kristin and Casey Gilbert and Emily and Jenny Epstein, her sisters Dorothy Pollock of GA, Marion Redonnet of Belmont, June and her husband Dr. Richard Wolff of Newton and Marcia and her husband Jeffrey Shapiro of Sharon. She is also survived by many loving nieces’ nephews and friends.She was the daughter of the late Durgam T. and Esther (Howard) Deeb.
A memorial service will be held on Sat Feb 3 at 10 AM in the First Baptist Church in Newton 848 Beacon St. (Corner of Centre St.) NEWTON CENTRE. Relatives and friends are kindly invited.
