Robert W. Horan, D.D.S., 77, a long established dentist in the New Bedford area died on Saturday, January 27, 2007 in Scottsdale, AZ where he had retired. He was the son of the late Dr. Thomas B. and Dorothy (Donaghy) Horan.
Dr. Horan was a graduate of St. John’s Preparatory School in Danvers, Fordham University in New York and Georgetown Dental Medical School along with attending Harvard University. He soon became known as the Dentist’s Dentist. He held the rank of Captain in the United States Army and was an avid sportsman. He enjoyed skiing, tennis, football and golf. He was an avid golfer at the Country Club of New Bedford and never lost his love for the game. He could recall each hole of the matches that he played with Tommy Bolt of the PGA. Dr. Horan won the New Bedford Country Club 4 Open and placed second in the Sr. Golf Olympics.
Robert is preceded in death by sons Joshua and Mark; stepson Michael McGarey; brothers Dr. Thomas B. and James M. Horan.
He is survived by his wife Joan McGarey-Horan;daughters Elisabeth Lisa, Nina and Maureen Horan; son Andrew Horan; stepsons O’Brien, Robert, Peter, Denver and Christopher McGarey; sisters Nancy Stone, Jackie Beckmann and Mary Hawes; brothers Dr. Peter Horan and William Horan; four grandchildren, a great-grandson, 30 step-grandchildren and many loving friends.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday February 3, 2007 at 11 AM in St. Mary's Church, South Dartmouth.
