Bernice G. (Viera) Smart, 78, of New Bedford died January 28, 2007 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness.
Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Annie G. (Viera) Fernandes, she lived in New Bedford most of her life.
Bernice was a member of the United House of Prayer For All People.
She was formerly employed by Zenith Company in Chicago for many years and was a member of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include a daughter, Rubie Wiley of New Bedford; 2 sons, Michael Duarte of Pacific Grove, CA and Charles Duarte of Eugene, OR; a sister, Jeanette Roderick of Sandwich; 6 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews.
She was the mother of the late James C. Duarte.
Her Homegoing Service will be held on Saturday, February 3rd at 12 Noon in the United House of Prayer For All People, 419 Kempton St. New Bedford. Her Graveside Service will be Monday, February 5th at 9 AM in Pine Grove Cemetery. Visiting hours Friday, February 2nd from 5-8 PM in the United House of Prayer For All People.

Travel I-195 Exit 13A, Route 140 South toward New Bedford. Travel South approximately 1 mile to traffic signal at the end of Route 140. Turn left onto U.S. Highway 6 East which is also known as Kempton St. Continue down Route 6 East (Kempton St.) for a mile and a half and the church will be on your left at 419 Kempton St.
