Richard D. Houghton, 87, of New Bedford died Sunday January 28, 2007 at his daughter's home surrounded by his family. He was the husband of the late Dorothy (Sheehan) Houghton.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Richard and Eleanor (Rawcliffe) Houghton, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.
Mr. Houghton was formerly employed as a repairman/installer for New England Telephone Company, and later A.T. & T., for over 40 years.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the East Fairhaven Improvement Association and the S.E.M.A.R.A. Radio Club in Dartmouth. He enjoyed volunteer work assistng the elderly with odd jobs around their houses and with the reading program at New Bedford High Adult Education Department.
Survivors include a daughter, Margaret Lafferty and her husband Michael of Dartmouth; a sister, Jeanne Allen of Fairhaven and California; two grandchildren, Michael Lafferty and his girlfriend Kelly Moura, and Megan Lafferty; a great-grandson, Cody Tkacs; and many nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Eleanor Rose and Dorothy Cate.
His Funeral Service will be held on Thursday at 10 AM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Burial with military honors will follow in Acushnet Cemetery. Visiting hours Wednesday 4-7 PM. For directions and guestbook, please visit www.saundersdwyer.com.
