Barbara Jean (Murphy) Doherty of Canton, formerly of Newton died on Saturday January 27 at Jordan Hospital in Plymouth. She was 78 years old. Born in Newton, the daughter of the late Lucy E. (Reilly) and James P. Murphy, Barbara was a graduate of Newton High School Class of 1947. Employed for many years by New England Telephone and Purolator Currier Service, she retired from AAA in Rockland MA in 1994. The beloved wife of the late Charles E. Doherty, she was the loving sister of Patricia Hughes and her husband Edward of Hyannis and the late Martin P. Murphy and his wife Barbara A. Murphy of Newton. Dear aunt of Edward J. Hughes of Arlington, VA, Philip J. Hughes of Kingston, Mary Beth Roche of Brooklyn, NY, Martin P. Murphy Jr. of Norfolk and Patricia Kelly of Shrewsbury. Also survived by 7 great nieces and nephews. Funeral from the Eaton and Mackay Funeral Home, 465 Center St. NEWTON CORNER, on Wednesday January 31 at 9:30 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Bernard’s Church at 10:30 AM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours on Tuesday from 4-7 PM. Interment at Calvary Cemetery in Waltham.
