Dr. F. Daniel Russell, of Burlingame Road in Smithfield died Friday, January 19, at RI Hospital in Providence. He was the husband of the late Edith (Holden) Russell.
Born in Providence, a son of the late Thomas and Ellen E. (Grady) Russell, he lived in Smithfield most of his life. He was a graduate of LaSalle Academy and Providence College. He attended Jefferson University Medical School and graduated from Tufts University Dental School in 1950.
He had his own dental practice in Centredale for over 38 years, retiring in 1988.
Dr. Russell was a former State Senator for District 29 from 1974 to 1979; he served on the Smithfield School Committee from 1956 to 1964; he was a member and former chairman of both the Smithfield Planning Board and the Smithfield Conservation Commission. He was a member of the RI Dental Society, the Audobon Society of Rhode Island, a Charter member and past president of the Smithfield Lions Club, a member and past president of the Smithfield Historical Society, the Western RI Civic Historical Society. He was also a member of the RI Mineral Hunters Club and a member and past president of the Georgiaville Volunteer Fire Dept. He was inducted into the Smithfield Heritage Hall of Fame in 2001.
He is survived by his children, Col. David H. Russell, RIARNG (Ret.) of Pascoag, F. Daniel Russell, Jr. of Foster, Andrew J. Russell of Glocester, Pamela A. Warhurst of Warwick, Ardith J. Russell of Smithfield, Chief Master Sergeant, RIANG Heidi C. Russell , of Wales, MA, Meredy P. Russell of Cave Junction, OR, Erica E. Russell of Warwick and Roanne J. Russell of Smithfield; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren; a brother, Col. Gerald F. Russell, USMC (Ret.) of State College, PA and a sister, Eileen Morrissey of Dennis, MA. He was the brother of the late Thomas G., William W. and James H. Russell.
Funeral Monday at 8:30am from the *ANDERSON-WINFIELD Funeral Home, Route 44 at Greenville Common, Greenville. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Philip Church, 622 Putnam Pike, Greenville at 9:30am.Burial will be in Highland Park, Johnston. Visitation Sunday 1-5pm.
