Obituary

Edward J. Fitzgerald, Jr., a 45 year resident of Melrose and formerly of Somerville, Arlington and Tewksbury, died on Wednesday January 17, 2007, at Brigham & Women's Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was 75 years old.

Ed was born in Cambridge on March 4, 1931. He grew up in Somerville, where he attended St. Catherine's Parochial School and graduated from Somerville High School in 1949. He enlisted into United States Marine Corps and served during the Korean Conflict. Ed began working for the original Boston Refrigiration Union which in later years became associated with is what now known as the Pipefitters Union. Ed has been a member of The Pipefitters Union local #537 for the last 52 years and has become a life time member of thier union. He had workedfor over 33 years thru the Pipefitters Union at Johnson Controls in Lynnfield which manufactors H.V.A.C. and thermostat controls. Ed enjoyed square dancing with his wife and camping with his family at Lake Winnapasaukee in New Hampshire. Ed devoted much time as a Eucharistic Minister at the Carmelite Chapel located within the Northshore Mall in Peabody. He was also very involved in his high school graduating class scholarship fund.

Ed is the beloved husband of 55 years to Ruth J. (Roberts) Fitzgerald. He is the devoted father of Kathleen L. Fitzgerald-Young of Long Lake, New York, Edward J. Fitzgerald lll of Chelmford, Colleen M. Fitzgerald-Lacey of Reading and the late Karen L. Norton. He is the loving grandfather of 10 grandchildren, the late Dustin Young and 2 great-grandchildren. He is the brother of Claire McNeil of Malden.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Ed's Funeral Mass on Saturday January 20, 2007 in The Most Blessed Sacrament Church 1155 Main St. Wakefield at 11 a.m. Visiting hours will be held on Friday January 19, 2007 in The Carr Funeral Home 1159 Main St. Melrose from 4 to 7 p.m. Cremation will take place following his Funeral Mass.

In lieu of flowers, kindly make memorial donations in Ed's name to St. Therese Carmelite Chapel, 210 Andover St., Northshore Mall, Peabody, Mass. 01960.
