Edward A. Hynes, 87, of New Bedford died Tuesday January 16, 2007 suddenly at St. Luke's Hospital. He was the husband of Erma E. (Kise) Hynes; they had been married for 65 years.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Edward A. and Agnes B. (Gaughan) Hynes, he lived in Washington, D.C. before returning to this area in the 1970's.
He was a communicant of St. Lawrence Church.
Mr. Hynes was formerly employed in retail sales for the Hecht Company and Woodward & Lothrop in Washington, D.C.
Mr. Hynes was active as docent at the New Bedford Whaling Museum for many years. He was a former member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard. After his military service, he attended George Washington University for several semesters. When he returned to this area, he matriculated at Southeastern Massachusetts University, graduating in 1981 with a Bachelor of Arts degree at the age of 62.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Edward L. Hynes and his wife Lisa of Bryantown, MD; a daughter, Deborah L. Hynes of New Bedford; a sister, Kathleen H. Burns of Bethesda, MD; a granddaughter, Emily H. Saunders; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the father-in-law of the late Paul F. Saunders and the brother of the late Thomas Hynes and Hilda H. Andrews.
His Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 9 AM in St. Lawrence Church. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.
