Margaret "Chickie" (Martin) Fortes, 88, of New Bedford died January 12, 2007 at St. Luke's Hospital.
She was the wife of John Fortes.
Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Joseph P. and Maria Rita (Neves) Martin, she lived in New Bedford for most of her life.
She was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.
Mrs. Fortes was formerly employed by the Nanfelt Seafood Company for many years until her retirement.
She was a former member of the St. John's Forever Young Club.
Survivors include her husband; two sisters, Helen Andrade and Rose Fernandes, both of New Bedford; and many nieces and nephews, including Jacqueline Barboza and Maria Elena Perry.
She was the stepmother of the late Nancy Pires, and sister of the late Pauline Veiga, Jennie Pina, Rita Stevens, Alice Correia, Dorothy Barros, May Rose, Joseph Senna, Edward Martin, and Manuel Pinto.
Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday at 9 AM in Our Lady of the Assumption Church. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery.
