Middletown, RI - Edward L. Mersey, Sr., 96, of Tiverton, RI passed away Friday, January 12, 2007 at Grand Islander Center. He was the husband of the late Evelyn G. (Burkman) Mersey.
Born in Little Compton, RI, son of the late Edward W. and Ella A. (Davis) Mersey, he was a resident of Tiverton for most of his life. Mr. Mersey had a captains license for piloting boats. He served as a telephone switchboard operator for the Town of Tiverton. He owned and operated the first Model T Ford dealership in Adamsville, RI. Prior to his retirement he was a project engineer at Brown & Sharp of Providence, RI and Acushnet Rubber Company of New Bedford. An avid bowler, he won many trophies from tournaments. Mr. Mersey was a past president, longest serving and oldest member of Tiverton Lions Club. He served as assistant harbor master for the Town of Tiverton. He was a Commodore at Tiverton Yacht Club. Mr. Mersey was the owner/founder of Riverside Marina, Tiverton, RI. He was an avid boater, fisherman, gardener and woodworker. He was a member of the First Baptist (Old Stone) Church, Tiverton, RI.
Survivors include a son: Edward L. Mersey, Jr. of Tiverton, RI; a daughter: Saily Rose of Tiverton, RI; Kelley and Jeffrey Lynch and family; several grandchildren; several great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
He was the father of the late Peter Mersey.
Graveside service to which relatives and friends are invited will be Monday, January 15, 2007 at Pocasset Hill Cemetery, Tiverton, RI at 10:00 A.M.
