Obituary

AIKEN R. GELO, a Hingham resident since 1945, died on Monday, Jan. 8th at the South Shore Hospital in Weymouth. He was 95. Mr. Gelo was born in Lowell, Vermont where he was raised and spent his early life. He then worked on his uncle's dairy farm in Long Valley, New Jersey for several years before joining the United States Army for World War II, during which time he served in Normandy, Northern France and the Rhineland.

Following the war, he came to Hingham where he owned and operated Gelo's Service Station until his retirement in the late 1980's. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Weymouth where he served on the Board of Deacons. He loved the wild birds in his neighborhood and always made sure they were properly fed.

Husband of the late Uta E.(Hayden) Gelo, he leaves his daughter, Sally Ann Harris of North Andover; and two sons, Stephen R. Gelo of Hingham and Raymond P. Gelo of Weymouth. Also survived by 8 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by seven brothers and sisters.

A graveside service will be conducted on Saturday, Jan. 13th at 10 AM at the Blue Hill Cemetery, 700 West St., Braintree followed by a Memorial Service at the First Baptist Church, 40 West St., South Weymouth at 11 AM.

Friends may visit at the Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, 21 Pond St., Hingham on Friday from 4-8 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the First Baptist Church Christian School, or to the First Baptist Church Mission Fund, both at 40 West St., South Weymouth, MA 02190.
