Obituary

WORCESTER-Elizabeth A. “Betty” (Eaton) Dowd, 65, of Worcester died Monday, January 1st, in University Commons. Her husband James A. Dowd, Jr. died in July. She leaves 2 sons, James A. Dowd, III and Casey A. Dowd both of Worcester; her sister Mary, wife Norman Beland of Westborough; and many nephews and nieces.

She was born in Worcester the daughter of Edward H. and Edna M. (Hines) Eaton. Mrs. Dowd had been an English teacher for 40 years at Forest Grove Junior High School, retiring in 2003. She was a graduate of Worcester State Teachers College, later earning her Masters in Education there. In 1986 she was named Teacher of the Year; and was awarded the key to the city. Mrs. Dowd was listed in Who’s Who in American Teachers, was a member of Mensa and Christ the King Parish and its choir. She once served as a Cub Scout Den Mother.

The funeral is Thursday, January 4th from O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue with a Mass at Noon in Christ the King Church, 1052 Pleasant Street. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery. Calling hours are Wednesday, January 3rd from 5:00 until 9:00 PM. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the American Diabetes Association, 330 Congress Street, Boston, MA 02210.
