Obituary

Harry J. Schmitt, Jr. a lawyer and Public Prosecutor for the Towns of Wareham, Marion, Mattapoisett, Rochester and Carver for over 30 years died of cancer on December 30, 2006. He was 76.

Schmitt, originally from Pittsburgh, PA graduated from Georgetown University, the University of Pittsburgh School of Law and served as a Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. He was an Assistant District Attorney for the City of Pittsburgh for 7 years before moving to Massachusetts.

Schmitt was instrumental in creating the office of public prosecutor working closely with local Police Chiefs to improve communication and continuity of law enforcement representation at the 4th District Court and was a guiding presence at the Court for many years. He was also a former Town Counsel for Wareham.

Schmitt was an active member of St. Rita's Parish in Marion for more than 40 years serving as Lector, Eucharistic Minister and on Parish Council and was active in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal leading prayer, teaching and healing ministries.

He is survived by his wife Patricia, sister Joan McCafferty and her husband David of Pittsburgh, and his six children: Ellen Hyatt and her husband George of Hampton, NH, Stephen Schmitt and his wife Catherine of Medford, NJ, H. J. Michael Schmitt, III, and his wife Mary of Nashua, NH, Kerry Scott and her husband Robert of Southold, NY, Matthew Schmitt and his wife Lisa of Bourne, MA, and Timothy Schmitt and his wife Carolyn of Charleston, SC., 21 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral from the Saunders – Dwyer Mattapoisett Home for Funerals, 50 County Rd. (Rt 6), Mattapoisett Wednesday January 3, at 9:00 AM. Funeral Mass at St. Rita’s Church, Marion, at 10:00 AM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours Tuesday January 2, from 4-8 PM. Burial St. Joseph Cemetery, Falmouth.
