Irene B. (Fazio) MacLeod, 75, of Pamela Avenue, Groton, CT, died peacefully in her home Friday, December 29, 2006, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
Born in Melrose, MA, on November 12, 1931, she was the daughter of Mary H. (Confalone) Fazio and the late Alfred J. Fazio of Wakefield, MA.
She was the devoted wife for 56 years of retired Navy MCPO Malcolm MacLeod. During Mac’s 22 years in the US Navy Submarine Service, they resided in Groton, CT; Norfolk, VA; Portsmouth, NH; San Juan and Ramey Air Force Base in Puerto Rico; Windsor Locks, CT before settling in Groton, CT, upon Mac’s retirement from the Navy in 1968.
Irene was a loving mother to (3) sons Michael MacLeod (deceased), Russell MacLeod of Hawthorne, FL; Johnny MacLeod of Westerly, RI, and daughter Bonnie Sue MacLeod of Bear River, Nova Scotia; with (10) grandchildren and (8) great grandchildren.
She is survived by (2) brothers Ronald and Roy Fazio of Wakefield, MA.
Irene graduated from Wakefield High School in 1949. She worked in the dental field for over 15 years and concluded her employment with the Mystic Dental Group as Office Manager. She was a member of the Mystic River Moon Runners Club. She ran and completed the 26.2 mile East Lyme Marathon in 1982 at the age of 50.
In addition to running, she enjoyed playing piano; boating; travel; gardening; dancing; woodworking; rug hooking; sewing; routing for the Boston Red Sox and NE Patriots; and was the #1 fan of Johnny and The East Coast Rockers.
Irene’s family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Tuesday, January 2, 2007 from 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm, immediately followed by a 5:30 pm service at the funeral home. Private burial will be at Elm Grove Cemetery in Mystic on Wednesday, January 3, 2007.
