Obituary

John Joseph “Mac” McCreevan of Charlestown died on Tuesday, December 26, 2006, at the Massachusetts General Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 75 years old.

Mac is a lifelong Charlestown resident. He was born in Boston on October 5, 1931. He attended Boston Public Schools. Mac enlisted into the U.S. Army on October 15, 1952, and served during the Korean Conflict where he was awarded the Bronze Star, the Silver Star and two (2) Purple Hearts for his valiant efforts during the war. Mac was discharged as a Corporal on September 25, 1954. He began working as a Longshoreman on the Boston Waterfront where he was a Stevedore for the International Longshoreman’s Association, Union Local No. 799. He worked, even while battling cancer, until he was unable to do so after so many decades on the Boston Waterfront. Mac was a member of the Halligan Club of Charlestown, the 520 Club of Charlestown, the Malden Irish American Club and the Old Charlestown Schoolboys Association.

Mac is the beloved husband of Helen P. “Honey” (Monagle) McCreevan. He is the devoted father of Donna Hickey and her husband Thomas and Deborah A. McCreevan all of Charlestown. He is the loving grandfather of Ryan and Kaleigh Hickey. Mac is the beloved brother of Richard McCreevan of Merrimac, Pauline O’Connor of Brighton and the late Kenneth McCreevan.

Mac’s Funeral will be held on Saturday, December 30, 2006, at 10:00 a.m. from the Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill Street, Charlestown, followed by his Funeral Mass in St. Frances de Sales Church, 313 Bunker Hill Street, Charlestown, at 11:00 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours for Mac will be held on Friday, December 29, 2006, from 4 – 8 p.m. Burial will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett.
