James E. Corbett, 83, of New Bedford died Saturday December 23, 2006 at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness. He was the husband of Betty (LeBouef) Corbett; they had been married for 58 years.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Thomas F. and Jane (Bilsborrow) Corbett, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.
He was a communicant of St. Lawrence Church.
Mr. Corbett was formerly employed as a telephone technician for New England Telephone Company for 33 years until his retirement.
He was a member of the Andrews-Dahill Post 1531 Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, and the Telephone Pioneers of America. He was a graduate of Holy Family High School. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy and participated in the Normandy Campaign and the Philippine Liberation.
Survivors include his wife; three children, James E. Corbett Jr. and his wife Karen and Patricia A. Corbett, all of Lakeville, and Paul T. Corbett of New Bedford; four grandchildren, Seamus E., Liam Patrick, Katherine L., and Brendan K. Corbett; a great-granddaughter, Aurora Nicole; and nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Cecelia Corbett and Thomas F. Corbett, Jr.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11 AM in St. Lawrence Church. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday from 4-8 PM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.
