Margaret Louise Smith 1915-2006

Margaret Smith, a life-long resident of Winchester, died at the Winchester Nursing Center on December 20th after a long illness.

The daughter of the late Judge Curtis Nash and Gertrude Symmes Nash, she leaves Dr. Robert M. Smith, her husband of sixty-nine years, and her children, Marcia Anne Dalva of Larkspur, CA, Jonathan E. Smith of Wellesley, MA and Karen E. Young of Andover, MA. Her grandchildren are Matthew, Corey, Marshall and Jessica Dalva, Baxter and Mason Smith, Ellen King and Kristen Young. Margaret’s great grandchildren are Nathan and Zachary.

Margaret attended Winchester schools and graduated from Smith College in 1936, after which she spent a year as an apprentice teacher at the Shady Hill School in Cambridge. Margaret and Robert Smith were married in 1937 when Robert was a student at Harvard Medical School. From 1935-1941 she was a teacher and Head Mistress at Milton Academy Lower School.

Margaret was Director of the Winchester Hospital 1960-1962, President of the Winton Club 1960-1962, President of the Winchester Garden Club and active with the Winchester Girl Scouts. She was interested in many aspects of history, gardening and walking through the Fells. Margaret and Robert enjoyed birding and shelling worldwide.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Winchester Unitarian Church, 478 Main St., on Sat., January 6th at 2:00 pm. Relatives and friends respectfully invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 311 Arsenal St., Watertown, MA 02472.
