Gerard E. McGowan, a retired Chief Inspector of Fire Prevention for the Boston Fire Department, died Sunday December 17, 2006. He was 91. He was the beloved husband of the late Joan (Adler) McGowan.
Mr. McGowan was born in Boston and was the son of the late Thomas F. and Catherine G. (Curley) McGowan. He was a World War II Veteran, serving in the U.S. Army. In addition to working as the Chief Inspector of Fire Prevention of the Boston Fire Department, he was also the Vice President of Fitz-Inn Auto Parks. Mr. McGowan was a longtime resident of Dedham.
He was the devoted father of Thomas F. McGowan of Temecula, FL, Mary M. Sullivan of Dedham, Gerard E. McGowan Jr. of Alberton, MT, Robert J. McGowan of Williamston, MI, Steven P. McGowan of Charleston, WV and Richard J. McGowan of Dedham. He was the brother of Charles M. McGowan of Dedham, Bernard and George McGowan of Vero Beach, FL and the late Francis, Leo, Albert, Paul and Timothy McGowan. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
His funeral will be held from the George F. Doherty & Sons Wilson-Cannon Funeral Home, 456 High St., Dedham, on Friday at 8:00 AM followed by a funeral mass in St. Mary’s Church, Dedham, at 9:00 AM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Visiting hours will be on Thursday from 4-8 PM. Interment in Brookdale Cemetery, Dedham.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Gerard’s memory to the Memorial Scholarship Fund of his grandson, Matthew P. Sullivan, at St. Sebastian’s School, 1191 Greendale Ave., Needham, MA 02492.
